Jurisdiction has two related meanings. First, it refers to the territory or legal system whose law governs a matter — English law, Scots law, New York law. Second, it refers to a court's authority to hear a particular type or size of case — the County Court has jurisdiction over most civil money claims in England and Wales up to any value.
